Beautiful Virginia Beach is an independent city in the South Hampton Roads metro area in the Commonwealth of Virginia. It has population of 447,000 and it is the largest city in Virginia, though its southern half of is covered by marsh and rural farmland. This beachfront city is a famous resort destination for millions of tourists. It has miles of beaches and hundreds of hotels, shops and restaurants along the oceanfront. Virginia Beach also boasts the longest pleasure beach in the world and longest bridge-tunnel complex in the world, the Chesapeake Bay-Bridge Tunnel (Guinness Book of Records).
Settlers first touched land at Cape Henry, in the northeast of present day Virginia Beach, but it was not until 1952 that it formally became a city. Most of the modern city was created in 1963 when the City of Virginia Beach and Princess Anne County consolidated and took its present name.Today this metropolitan city attracts millions of tourists every year from college students during spring break to families who want to enjoy a summer vacation at the beach. Additionally, many just come to marvel at the spectacular Virginia Beach sunrises on the dazzling waters of the Atlantic. Besides tourism, this city’s economy relies on three military bases, several large corporations and two universities to provide its solid foundation for continued success in the future.
